Trend Alert – Summer Denim

By Jill Marshall in Trends, Womenswear on Wednesday 30th June, 2010

Yes, we know denim is always trendy, but recently we have seen a resurgence in this wardrobe staple. A tricky thing for most girls, is how to wear this trend in summer, when the heat might dampen your excitement for jeans. The key is to simply add one or two key pieces.

Full length jeans during the summer can be a bit to “warm” for most people, but there are always denim dresses or shorts! To add a denim twist to any oufit, you can’t go wrong with a cropped sleeve biker jacket. Throw over any summer dress, and you are good to go!

Have you got a denim tip? Let us know how you will be wearing denim this summer.

Who is your World Cup team?

By Lauren Cooke in Womenswear on Tuesday 29th June, 2010

The World Cup is here! What, you mean you know?! Oh yes, that’s right, it is all anyone has been talking about for the past month. Well, now that England are out of the running we know that you are supposed to pretend that the World Cup never happened at all, but we think it is the perfect chance to celebrate some of the other teams who are still taking part.

If you fancy staying in the World Cup spirit, then why not wear an outfit based on the colours of your favourite team? England was the obvious choice, of course, but there are plenty of other nations that are great fun to watch and to support (you just might not want to do so at some of the rougher football loving pubs…).

With the help of Clothing at Tesco I have put together a few outfits inspired by some of the best flags in the World Cup, so that you can watch those games in style!

Items: F&F crop cardigan, Strappy platform shoe, Skinny jeans, Drawstring tunic, Yellow watch

The German team probably isn’t a favourite at the moment, but it is always a pleasure to watch them play football. Plus, I have a great deal of affection for our old football rivals, and always enjoy watching them play. Make black the base of this outfit, so that the red top and yellow accessories have something to stand out against.

Items: F&F shell top, Cut out pumps, Boyfriend jacket, Double layered skirt, Hoop necklace

Argentina are doing well so far too, and their flag lets us create a really light and summary outfit. The gentle and cool pairing of blue and white is given a little flare by the sunny yellow, making their colours a budding fashionista’s dream!

Items: F&F bandeau dress, Leather wedges, Studded trilby, Mischa Barton cross over bag

To be honest you could revamp the Dutch outfit to be French if you wanted, thanks to the similarity between the flags! I like the idea of teaming muted whiteish accessories with a pretty red summer dress, and using your makeup to make the statement in blue.

Items: Floral shorts, Signature wallet, Checked shirt, Knotted vest, Weaved pumps

Ghana are my personal favourite for the world cup, not to win but just for fun. So far they are defying everyone’s expectations! Cheer them along with a bright and colourful outfit – such as these cute floral shorts, a green top, and a yellow top. It ain’t quiet and it ain’t subtle, but I think it is a really fun look!

Hong Kong Street Style

By Kate in Street Style on Monday 28th June, 2010

Hong Kong is a city of huge contrasts – Michelin-starred restaurants rub shoulder-to-shoulder with cheap noodle houses, the slick MTR underground system and countless red taxis run alongside the historic trams that trundle the width of the island, and fashion here is no exception!

The contrast between aspirational designer gowns and bargain market stall gems; smart workwear crafted by Hong Kong’s finest tailors and slogan T-shirts with ripped jeans evoking Japanese punk; traditional Eastern values borrowing from modern Western aesthetics is apparent from the moment you hit the streets.

Office ladies tend to be immaculately dressed at all times, usually in black, often with skyscraper heels or a luxe touch of designer arm candy. It’s not unheard of for entry-level workers here to live on instant noodles for a month in order to afford a pair of Louboutins come payday – now that’s dedication to style!

Youth style tends to be playful and experimental in Hong Kong, experimenting with slogan tees, customised or engineered denim and bright, colourful accessories. The city’s many small boutiques cater to the crowd that wants to stand out in this city of 7 million!

The yummy mummy is another definite feature of the Hong Kong style landscape. Manicures, pedicures and massages are considered essential maintenance here, rather than an occasional treat and styles tend to be well-heeled and certainly well-groomed. Plenty of neutral shades and well-cut denims along with expensive, if tastefully understated accessories that work from the PTA meeting to cocktails at sunset!

It’s a cliché, yes, but style here truly embodies the ‘east meets west’ vibe that the city is so famous for. Sometimes this can result in a clash, but generally the two cultures collide harmoniously to form a style that’s totally distinct to Hong Kong.

Menswear Spring/Summer 2011

By Reena Rai in Menswear on Thursday 24th June, 2010

With all this football talk over the last week or so, we’ve barely had a chance to mention Menswear Fashion Week in Milan. The likes of Roberto Cavalli and Vivienne Westwood have had such inspirational catwalk shows, giving us a sneak peek into what style conscious men will be wearing next summer. It all kicked off last Saturday with Dolce & Gabbana, who were celebrating their 20th anniversary in Menswear. With so many gorgeous menswear looks – and models – on the catwalk we were spoilt for choice, but our firm favourite in the office was Versace.

Inspired by their archives and photography by renowned fashion photographer Bruce Weber, the collection has a definite Eighties vibe. We loved the new suit silhouette, which was very fitted with slightly shortened sleeves and trousers rolled up at the ankle. As well as sleek and sophisticated suits, they also had some more casual, rockabilly-inspired looks with fringed leather and plaid shirts. The collection featured a lot of black but with splashes of white, aqua blue, pink and red which are refreshingly summery.

Here are some staple pieces you can use to achieve this look at an affordable price:

F&F check shirt, F&F shirt & tie set, Urban Resistance suit jacket, Urban Resistance suit trousers, Urban Resistance grey suit trousers

Invest in a dark navy suit, that you can wear with a contrasting collar shirt. You can also mix the jacket with a lighter shade of trousers, and for days when you don’t need a formal jacket, pair the lighter trousers with a checked shirt.

You don’t need to spend a million to look like a million dollars…

Beachwear

By Rochelle Symons in Childrenswear, Menswear, Top Picks, Womenswear on Wednesday 23rd June, 2010

With so much sunshine today, we really got into a ‘beachy’ mood, hoping and dreaming that our summer holidays come soon! Long days on the sand reading a book while watching the kids build a sandcastle.

So here are some of our ideas for those beach essentials you just have to have if you are planning a beach holiday this year:

Sundress, F&F chain swimsuit, F&F rivet sandals, F&F distressed denim shorts

For the ladies, a one piece is not only seriously on trend, but it hides a multitude of sins. Paired with some shorts, it can also move from beach front to beach bar with little effort. Flip flops and a versatile sundress are also two key pieces every lady should have on hand.

F&F straw trilby, Storm rimless sports wrap sunglasses, F&F leather toe post sandals, F&F checked swim shorts

For the men, a good pair of swimming shorts, a hat to protect a burning scalp (definitely not for covering up a bald patch), some sunglasses and classic leather flip flops, and you are good to go!

Thonged flip flops, Peppa Pig swimsuit, Ben 10 flip flops, F&F hooded beach poncho, F&F two pack fisherman hatsBen 10 swim shorts

For the kids, the most important thing is keeping their sensitive skin protected from the sun. For the little boys, I am sure you would agree that anything Ben 10 related will keep a big smile on their faces! Pair that with a sensible fishing hat, and you have a very happy (and protected) little one! For the girls, we just love frilly swimsuits! Another great buy, for girls or boys is a hooded towel. Keeps the sun away and it means no more squirming with them when you are trying to dry them off!

So wherever you and the family are heading off for your holidays, have a good time and remember to protect our sensitive British skins! Pink is definitely not a good colour this season….

England vs. Slovenia

By Rochelle Symons in Womenswear on Monday 21st June, 2010

Right, so this week we think it might be appropriate to take a different approach with the men in our lives (maybe something England manager Fabio Capello should also consider..) After the somewhat unsatisfying performance at the World Cup on Friday, we don’t think many men were very happy!

So we thought we would give you guys some tips on how to make the most of the upcoming England vs Slovenia World Cup match, come victory or defeat!

What’s the tip? Lingerie. Perfect for a celebration should we win, but also perfect as a ‘consoler’ if we lose. Well, it will take his mind of the game at least.

So, here are two little outfits we have put together:

Diamond Boutique spoilt plunge bra, Diamond Boutique spoilt thong, Diamond Boutique spoilt French knickers

If you want to go with a Slovenian theme, this Diamond Boutique ensemble is perfect. You know what they say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer…

F&F half corset, F&F lace briefs

For some glamourous patriotism, try out these lace inspired F&F items. Looking perfectly angelic never seemed so easy. Pair with a red rose in your hair, and there you go, the perfect English rose!

Who said patriotism couldn’t be sexy?

Clothing at Tesco loves…Being a Mummy

By Alison Halstead in Clothing at Tesco loves on Friday 18th June, 2010

Friday time again, the weeks seem to fly by in summer don’t you agree?

The upside is that is brings us another amazing blog to share with you guys. This week that blog is “Being a Mummy.” In it she writes about surviving suburban life with a baby and toddler. No easy task, as many of you will agree!

The darkly humorous musings make a great read, we especially enjoyed the recent: Bane of My Life; Part 2 Featuring Toilets and Now Theres a Good Scam.

She also shares her parental learnings, and is not afraid to be open and honest about some of the more unusual parenting practices she deploys.

All in all, we find her blog a great read, and a necessary resource for those in the team with similarly aged kids. An escape from your own reality, a glimpse into hers, and knowing that you are not alone in your parenting journey. Highly recommended.

You can also follow Being a Mummy on Twitter.

If you think there is a blog we should definitely be reading, let us know and if we like it, it could be featured on the blog.

Have a great weekend everyone!
