This week, our inspiration-seeking eye is fixed on the character of Rachel in About a Boy, played by Rachel Wiesz. This film is a true festive favourite here at F&F (and that’s not just because we love Hugh Grant, thank you very much) so we were very excited at the prospect of reliving it, this time keeping our focus on fashion. Rather than Hugh.
Since so many of us are on the look-out for that perfect Christmas party dress, hairstyle and makeup, we’re dedicating this guide to recreating Rachel’s festive formal look.
Throughout this film, Rachel wears lots of red, and with her gorgeous dark locks and porcelain skin, it’s the right move to make. We love her casual combo of a red T-shirt with long black sleeves almost as much as we adore her gorgeous red evening dress at the formal party. Almost.
The dress in question is adorned with shimmering silver swirls that look so dazzling, we’re not surprised Hugh’s character, Will, can’t resist her. It’s one-shoulder style makes the dress even more dramatic, and her up-do makes the most of her exposed shoulder for a sexy-but-not-too-revealing look.
If you’re going to choose a dress with an extra-special neckline, do it justice by sweeping long hair off your shoulders and into a sophisticated updo. Rachel’s style features several small plaits which keep her hair off her face and come together in a chic knot at the back. The look is not too perfect, giving it a bit of character and adding to the subtle sexiness. Recreate the look by twisting sections of hair back from your face, adding to them as you go to form French plaits, then tucking them into a low bun at the back of your head.Makeup
Rachel’s brows really define her face, so adding definition to your own is essential if you want to channel her style. Once you’ve perfected your complexion with a matte foundation, a subtly smoky eye is all you need. Her look is understated to let her dress do the talking, so we’d go for grey shadow for a softer alternative to black.
