Summer is coming…

By Hannah Thomas in As advertised, Behind the scenes, SS13, Trends on Thursday 25th April, 2013

The sun is shining (finally!) and here at F&F HQ we’re feeling oh-so summery. Whilst this is partly due to the long awaited weather change, it may also have something to do with the fact that we’ve been playing our new TV ad, over and over again, to really get us thinking about our holidays and the hot British summer that we hope is coming our way this year.

The brand new advert, which launches tomorrow night during Alan Carr’s Chattyman on Channel 4, shows some of the key pieces for our latest summer range.

With a mix of beautifully bright colours and rays of sunshine captured within the advert, it’s no wonder it’s getting us in the mood for sun, sea and sand!

Take a look for yourself and view a sneak peek of the new summer ad here and shop the range now to get ready to embrace your summer style!

Behind the scenes at our Meet the Team shoot

By laurahenshaw in Behind the scenes, Meet the Team, SS13 on Thursday 11th April, 2013

We thought you might like to get to know our menswear and womenswear teams a little better so we arranged a Meet the Team photo shoot which took place yesterday at F&F HQ. The shoot included seven ladies and two gentlemen from our buying teams and took place in different locations around the office. Everyone loved getting their hair and make-up done by professionals (even the guys) and did their best to perfect their model faces while modelling our F&F and branded pieces. We took some sneaky behind the scenes pictures to get you excited for the main feature which will be appearing online in our Inspire Me section soon.

Look out for our Meet the Team feature soon!

Feeling Fabulous at British Plus Size Fashion Weekend

By Hannah Thomas in Behind the scenes, Blogspot, Plus Size, SS13 on Thursday 21st February, 2013

Wow… what a great week it has been celebrating the first British Plus Size Fashion Weekend! We were super excited to have our three roving reporters at the event filling us in on all the gossip from the day. Sit back and relax whilst they bring you their experiences from the day…

Becky – Mrs BeBe

When F&F Clothing invited me to cover the British Plus Size Fashion Weekend I was excited to head to London and experience it for myself. There has been so much press coverage and hype about the weekend, and as the organiser of a plus size fashion event myself I was intrigued to see how this would compare. Of course the lure of London is very appealing and lots of amazing fashionable plus size women had travelled from far and wide to experience the event, and I think for me that’s what I’ll take from the day, it was great to be in the company of so many wonderful confident women who embrace fashion in a world that doesn’t always embrace them and make it work.

The day itself, unfortunately suffered from some teething problems, the venue wasn’t the best if I’m completely honest, it lacked the facilities needed for such a big event and the staff seemed a little overwhelmed by the task. I did however enjoy seeing some great, fashion forward exciting designers on the catwalk, modelled by some stunning plus size models, and the plus size discussion panel (that I live tweeted) brought up some interesting topics. I look forward to seeing how the team will improve on next year’s event.

Caroline – Curvy Wordy

On Saturday 16th February 2013 I was fortunate enough to attend the inaugural Official British Plus Size Fashion Week (BPSFW) on behalf of F&F Clothing. The event was held at Shoreditch Town Hall in east London and was attended by a number of bloggers and the general public, all anticipating a great day full of inspirational activities.

We took part in a styling master class, a model 101 session, a plus size panel discussion and a clothes swap.  The day was rounded off with a fashion show, which lasted over an hour as there were so many brands on show!  It was inspirational to see the clothes being modelled by plus-sized models and I love all the gorgeous new prints that are coming out this season.

My highlights of the day have to be meeting up with so many of my blogger friends (and making new ones!) and being able to network with the brands at the event.

Overall, there was a positive feeling about the event as it brought together brands,  designers, bloggers, the press and retail customers, all with the same aim – to get more fashion choices available for plus-sized women.  However, there were several problems during the day and the organisation and venue left a lot to be desired.  I know the team are keen to learn lessons from the event and I am sure that if it takes place next year BPSFW will be bigger and better!

Thanks so much to F&F Clothing for giving me the opportunity to attend the event.

Emma – Fashion Mommy

I was very excited and really honored to be asked to represent F&F clothing at the first London Plus size Fashion Weekend on Saturday. As a proud plus size lady I was really pleased to be given the opportunity to meet lots of lovely bloggers, browse a market place containing hot new labels on the plus size fashion scene, and enjoy a rather exciting fashion show featuring new and established plus size brands.

I had a really fantastic time, there were just so many highlights that it is hard to keep to a word limit in describing my day. Caroline from Curvy Wordy and Becky from The Ramblings of Mrs BeBe were just fantastic, and it was also great to catch up with Bethany from My Arched Eyebrow who was also covering the day. I got to meet and chat with one of my fashion idols, the wonderful designer Anna Scholz, who just delighted me when she complimented me on my dress, which was an F&F purchase, of course!

The fashion show was a great indicator of just how far plus-size fashion is progressing, with 11 great brands that encompassed High Street to High Fashion, modelled by a diverse range of beautiful woman who were embracing their body shapes, and proving that the adage that fashion looks better on skinny frames is just wrong. Some clothes do suit a slim frame better, but some designs need curves to show them to their best advantage, and this was shown in a range of figure hugging designs, with not a shapeless smock in sight.

The event wasn’t perfect, a refreshment area where you could sit down and get a cold drink was sorely needed, LPSFW was very ‘dry’ in this respect, and with gaps between events there was also a need for a general area where guests and bloggers could sit, wait and chat between events. The discussion panel was so interesting it could probably have been longer in duration, whilst the Colour workshop was a little chaotic. But this was the first time this event had taken place, and so it was  a learning curve. Hopefully LPSFW will go from strength to strength, growing bigger and better each year.

With huge thanks to F&F for the invitation.

Pretty Polly: We Salute You

By Zarah Harrison in Behind the scenes, News on Tuesday 29th May, 2012

As the Jubilee is upon us, an appreciation of Great British Brands has started to come to the fore and why the devil not, eh? I recently had the opportunity to visit the Pretty Polly factory up in Derby.

Now I’m going to be job risking-ly honest about it and admit, I did wonder just how interesting it was going to be. I mean, tights come in black or flesh mostly, they pretty much all look the same and it can’t take much effort to make a pair of tights, right? Wrong! It was an afternoon that opened my pre-judging eyes and gave me a real appreciation for the craftsmanship that is hosiery.

Pretty Polly was founded in 1919 but is owned today by a company called Courtaulds which also owns Aristoc, Berlei and Gossard. They also produce hosiery for private labels, such as Boots among others.

Heart-warmingly , it is here in the Derby factory, that over 95% of their product is created. A great example of British companies keeping the production in house and providing jobs at home! So it is this, plus their long standing history, that qualifies them to be classed as a Great British heritage brand. And this is also one of the reasons the team here at Clothing at Tesco were so happy when it was announced we were to sell them on our site.

The first thing that struck me during my visit was the production levels; frankly, mind boggling! Using 30 tonnes of yarn every year, (with 200 permutations), this factory with 410 employees,  470 machines, working 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, produces 36 million pairs of hosiery, with a retail UK market value of £300 million. All here at home on our very own British soil, in a quiet and rather quaint Midlands town.

I walked through the factory floor feeling geeky awe at this industrious hive of hosiery production. I learned that there are four stages in the making of (most) tights: knitting, sewing, dyeing and drying. I wandered through the spinning section, watching the rows and rows of machinery whirring away at an incredible speed.

From start to finish, the stockings, tights, knee socks, hold-ups and more were spun; spools of yarn whirred furiously and individual white stocking legs gently dropped out from a funnel near the top and floated down into piles. Each one of the 470 machines has 400 tiny knitting needles, which spin 170 hours a week, and between them the knitting machines use 17 tonnes of yarn every year, producing 800,000 pairs every week at a rate of a leg every two minutes.

These individual legs of tights are then wheeled into the sewing department where they’re manually attached to a machine that adds the gusset and seals the toes. I found myself being surprised by the amount of hand labour that goes into the making, I’d just assumed these things were all done by machine and although they are, each one is loaded by hand. Whilst that may not seem like the most exciting job in the world, in this economic climate, a factory such as this provides much needed jobs. For the higher end product in the range, they actually hand stitch the gusset on the tights. The detail, level of work and attention to quality for the product was way above what I’d expected .

By now the tights shape had come together – but each one was a pasty white So, next, they are wheeled through to the dye house. Loaded into drums, the dye is then pumped into the machines, and they’re left to soak for anywhere from 2 ½ to 12 hours (2 ½ for the sheer product and up to 12 hours for the cotton poly mix).

To help the dye to dry, the hosiery is then put in what is essentially a big microwave. I‘ll admit I did wonder if next time I find myself in a situation where my tights still haven’t dried from the wash, could I pop ‘em in the microwave? I’ve yet to find out but maybe I’ll add my findings into another blog post.

At this point, everything’s ready to go, so now the tights just need checking and packing up. Every pair is checked individually using light boxes to search for ladders or snags. Quality is extremely important here in ‘hosiery towers’ (as it’s affectionately named by locals) and you have to hand it to them, checking every single of the 36 million pairs that leave their factory doors each year is pretty darn diligent. Astonishingly, 75% of the packing is done by hand.

So next time you unwrap your pair of newly bought tights, stop and think about these Derby factory workers who individually checked that pair for imperfections and who folded and hand packaged these up just for you. And when you slide the silky stocking up your leg and admire yourself in the mirror, spare a thought for the worker who may have hand stitched those tights, just to ensure a better quality for you. Think of the hard graft and the care and the checking that have gone in to each product, you could say making it ‘fit for a queen’.

No need to pull your socks up Pretty Polly, you’re top of your class already!

What We’re Wearing

By Rochelle Symons in Behind the scenes, News, Womenswear on Thursday 23rd December, 2010

Hi guys! We hope everyone is keeping warm and safe during these snowy times. There are a few gorgeous F&F aviator jackets left in the sale so be sure to check it out if you’re still on the hunt for one (and look out for our ‘super sale top picks’ feature tomorrow)

So all this layering of garments under hats, scarves and gloves has got us thinking – is it possible to stay warm and still look good in these sub-zero times?  We think so, and we thought we’d give you a low-down on what we’re wearing so you can judge for yourselves (please be nice!)

Emma is wearing the F&F Limited Edition Open weave knitted jumper – paired with jeans and some gorgeous F&F ankle boots.

Rochelle is wearing a fab and funky pair of Tesco wellies! She’s teamed this with a belted warm and wooly F&F Long cardigan – we especially love the faux fur trim on this.

There’s also a variety of hats, scarves, snoods, welly socks and gloves that go on when we step outside too of course.  Some of us go for the colour-co-ordinated approach, and some of us like to brighten things up with some bold statements like this gorgeous F&F stripe diamante scarf and glove set.

There’s a great range available on the site, but we’d love to hear if there’s something you’d like to see, and any tips you have for looking stylish in winter.  Let us know what you think!
